Close Encounters of the Truck Stop Kind

Stories from the road...
At a truck stop in Iowa:
We pull up to a pump outside the front doors and John proceeds to begin filling the tank. I jump out and tell him I’m going in to use the facilities and to just meet me inside when he’s done. Enter the truck stop - looks average, albeit a bit dingy and dark. I notice there are security guards, which is something I haven’t seen often, so I feel a slight apprehension but I continue towards the restroom. Enter the restroom - looks dingy like the rest of the place, an identifiable odour lurks, I try not to touch anything with my bare hands. Fast forward >>>I am now washing my hands and here enters a petite, middle-aged woman of Asian descent. I am facing the mirror and behind me I can see two regular stalls and a handicapped stall, all doors wide open. The woman enters the handicapped stall against the wall to my right, turns to face me, looks me in the eyes and undoes her belt in an odd manner, jerking it to the right, looking like she’s about to pull the whole belt out of her pants. Now I’m feeling quite awkward and I quickly look down to finish rinsing my hands. I fully expected her to shut the door but shockingly, when I glance back up, I see this woman whip down her pants and SIT directly on the toilet, door wide open, once again, LOOKING at me. I made a face that said, "ewww, nasty!" and booked it out of there. I’m sure John saw the disgust on my face because as I walked back toward the car, he said, "What? Was it gross in there?" I told him what happened and we laughed. Once he finished with the gas, we went back into the truck stop to buy some drinks and as we passed the restroom, that woman came walking out and smiled at me as she went by us! What the Q??? lol
At another truck stop in Pennsylvania:
This was last Tuesday - we were on our way home after having left the Cleveland area that morning. It was about lunchtime and we were thirsty anyway so we got off the highway and stopped at a TA. We walked to the door and just as we got there, it opened. There stood an Amish man, with two women in bonnets. Immediately, my inner soundtrack started playing, "Jebediah feeds the chickens and Jacob plows..." I felt guilty for a moment, but it passed. We get inside, and there is a long line of Amish people...at Burger King! What is up with that? John says he doesn’t think they have any rules about what they can eat and from what I’ve read, I don’t think they do either. Still, it was a bit odd. Then grandpa Amish came walking up from the back of the store with a righteous gray beard and busted out a wallet with a wad to pay for some stuff at the counter. Where’s all that money from? They must be selling some pretty fancy butter whence he came. Anyway, they all piled into a giant van (driven by a non-Amish man, as evidenced by his lack of beard and hat and casual dress) and hit the highway headed toward New York. I still wonder where they were going...
I know I still need to sort through my pictures. I swear, I will be posting more later! I think the last post with pictures went up to Flagstaff, AZ and it only got prettier after that!

~tinyrant~

I’m sorry. I can’t work with stupid people.
When are people going to learn to give all of the necessary information when they want something? I am not a mind reader nor a psychic. I take pleasure in asking multiple questions one after another to drive home the fact that someone was lax in providing complete details. I hope I am incredibly annoying. Don’t waste my time.
Maybe if it wasn’t so trendy to be dumb...

gogogo!

It’s been 4 days since we returned home from our trip. I’ve been so busy, I haven’t had time to sort through the hundreds of pictures I took and I definitely haven’t had time to shrink and upload them to blog. The weekend will be pretty busy too - today we are taking 4 of our nieces to see Horton Hears A Who! I always did like Dr. Suess and this movie has gotten good reviews thus far. Then tomorrow, we are heading out to Boston to bring my sister-in-law to Children’s Hospital and we’ll be visiting our nephew Justin while we’re there. This 13-year-old kid is an inspiration to me. We’ve all watched him go through so much over the past couple years and that HAPPY ending we’ve all been praying for is just around the corner now. After all he’s been through, he’s still strong and determined to beat this thing. I don’t think I could have made it half as far as he. Please keep him in your prayers.

Here is another one of my favorite pics from the trip. This was taken just Northeast of Las Vegas, before we hit Utah.

Rewind!

Sunday morning, Knoxville, TN - we wake up early and get ready to leave our comfy room at the Hampton Inn. We hit the road intending to reach Oklahoma City by nightfall. TN is a pretty state...

but it's really not all THAT different from sme places in MA, right? I think we were on the road all of 45 minutes before a state trooper pulled us over. He was the nicest cop I have ever heard and fittingly, his name was "Officer Jolley". John had been speeding (85 in a 70). He was not nice enough to NOT give us a ticket though...

John was not pleased...$149 down the drain. We decided it was no big deal and put the ticket away and resumed driving. I think he set the cruise at 73 or something at that point.
Next major landmark - Nashville, TN. We didn't stop, we just drove through.

It's a pretty city. We liked the building with the spikes. :) Just past Nashville was this giant cross peeking out from the trees...

It was really pretty.
The next 200 miles or so were pretty boring, scenery-wise. Nothing really to photograph untl we hit Memphis. I snapped a pic of this building, which I believe is an arena...

Then we crossed the Mississippi and entered Arkansas simultaneously!
Arkansas. What can I say about Arkansas? There is a whole lot of NOTHING in Eastern Arkansas. It is flat, there are farms, irrigation ditches, farms and also farms. Did I mention farmland? Arkansas' one redeeming quality is its Western half. There is some really pretty terrain over there. We saw a family of deer...oh, and farms. The sky however, was gorgeous!! Check it...

There were storms coming...but the sun was breaking through the clouds and the beams were just so defined. It was so pretty.
We did have to take a quick detour through Little Rock

...typical.
Sunday, late afternoon, we are headed for Oklahoma and we know there are storms in our path but John insists he's not worried and we'll be fine, so we continue onward. Apparently, John did not learn his lesson because he got pulled over for doing 80 in a 70 this time. Luckily, we got another nice officer and whether it was because he also was driving a Charger, or he was in a good mood, or he got a call for an accident up the road - he only gave John a warning. We were pleased about that but John was upset because I was picking on him.

Hahah...I made him pose for this one.
It was dark as we were entering Oklahoma and about halfway to Oklahoma City, I started seeing some crazy lightning off to the north. We are heading West on I-40, so I hoped that maybe the storms were passing just north of us. Well -I was WRONG! My sister-in-law was texting me asking me where we were...and telling me that bad storms were headed our way. We continued to drive and then it hit us all of a sudden. The sky was black, the lightning was long and furious, the rain was hitting the window and splattering to the size of saucers. The wind was 40-50mph constant gusting and then the hail came. It was small hail, didn't cause any damage to the car, but it was scary nonetheless. I had the weather band playing on the handheld cb radio we have and they were talking about tornado watches everywhere. It was the most amazing and terrifying storm I have seen in my life and let it be said that Oklahoma did not disappoint! Other side of the city - it rained for a bit and the gusts continued all the way in to Texas, where the snow started. We made it most of the way to Amarillo before we encountered a stand-still. It was only a few trucks and a couple of cars so we plowed through the median and got on the parallel highway (Route 66) to try to find a way around. Turned out a U-Haul had rolled in the middle of the road and two 18-wheelers crashed trying to avoid it. We were driving down back roads as strong winds sent blinding sheets of snow across our path. Finally, 230am, we find our way into the city.
We got a room at the Sleep Inn...which at one time had been a favorite hotel of mine because the others in which I had stayed were really clean and nice. This one was a DUMP! We got stuck with a smoking room, one queen size bed with a nasty bedspread!

I am never staying at a Sleep Inn again.
-------------------------------
Monday morning we leave the hotel and head to Sonic for some grub. While we were there, some little birdies came along and let me take their pictures!

They were so good, I fed them some tots!
I am not sure how they usually handle snow, but this time, they did not put any sand or salt on the roads and as a result, people were crashing:

...and then there was traffic...

I didn't mind so much, because it gave me a chance to snap some nice pics of the scenery. Let me tell you - the western half of the Texas panhandle is some of the most beautiful, serene land I have ever seen. It was just peaceful as can be.

I would really love to live there. It made me happy.
Early afternoon - entering New Mexico...WOW. How pretty! This was our first view coming over the hill...
and now...here is New Mexico...

(this one was at the very end of sunset...)

(not really...lol)
We drove on into AZ...it got dark...and we found another Hampton Inn in Flagstaff. That is where we are now. Tomorrow - VEGAS!!!
P.S. Miscellaneous things that made us laugh:

It's Mojo Jojo!!!
P.P.S. This is my favorite pic of the day - and of the trip so far. It is speaking...
G'night
